Real-world insights into the lung cancer diagnosis and treatment journey
Lung cancer carries a profound impact on patients, affecting their emotional, physical, and financial well-being. A recent survey of 235 individuals living with non-small cell lung cancer conducted by Swoop reveals the complexities of their experiences, from the often-delayed path to diagnosis to the pervasive challenges of managing the disease.
Two-thirds of respondents reported seeing multiple doctors before receiving a diagnosis, often facing misdiagnoses or experiencing symptoms easily mistaken for other health issues. The emotional toll is significant, with many reporting anxiety (75 percent) and depression (64 percent). Physical limitations and treatment side effects further compound these challenges, impacting quality of life and hindering physical activity for a majority of patients. Financial hardship is also a stark reality, with a substantial portion struggling with treatment costs and early retirement.
Despite these difficulties, patients express high satisfaction with their lung cancer doctors, praising their communication and respectful treatment. However, access to mental health resources remains limited for many, highlighting a critical gap in care.
This research underscores the urgent need for a more patient-first approach to lung cancer care. By understanding and addressing the unmet needs of patients, we can improve overall well-being and create more supportive and effective treatment strategies.
